Dry tea leaves contain more caffeine by weight than dry coffee beans! … However, more coffee by weight is used to make an individual hot drink and therefore a cup of coffee is higher in caffeine than a cup of tea.
Once consumed the caffeine in coffee is released into the body quickly acting as a stimulant, and resulting in a quick burst of energy, typically followed by a crash. The caffeine in tea is released more slowly thanks to the effect of L-theanine, a natural amino acid found in the tea leaf that slows down the release of caffeine into the blood-stream. The effect is similar to eating a bar of chocolate for a quick energy burst, versus eating a bowl of porridge. Drinking tea releases energy more slowly, but over a longer period.
It’s a challenge, but tea can be grown in the UK! … There are currently artisan tea growers in Cornwall, Perth Scotland, Lincolnshire, Northern Ireland, and at Peterston Tea Estate here in South Wales.
